BATU HIJAU, Tambangnews.com. – PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT) is disappointed that the Regent of West Sumbawa will pressure its employees to form an illegal blockade in an effort to stop PTNNT’s operations tomorrow, April 18, 2011.
”The Regent’s role is to uphold the law, ensure order and support economic development in the Regency, not to create illegal blockades designedto shut down PTNNT’s operations,” said David Lilley, PTNNT’s General Manager of Operations.
“Unfortunately, if the Regent goes ahead with the action, it will only serve to scare away investment in Sumbawa and Indonesia, and if it actually impacts operations would potentially reduce the amount of money the local, regional and central governments will receive from Batu Hijau.”
PTNNT said it expects the Government authorities to take all necessary, peaceful actions to prevent KSB’s employees from illegally affecting PTNNT’s operations. The company said it has a mandate under its Contract of Work to safely and responsibly operate Batu Hijau on behalf of the Government of Indonesia and for the benefit of all stakeholders, including KSB’s government and local communities.
“We will take all necessary precautions and legal action to protect our interests and recover all damages if KSB goes ahead with this illegal and irresponsible roadblock,” said David Lilley. “We appreciate the support of the Governor of NTB and other elected officials opposing the Bupati’s efforts to prevent our workers and contractors from reaching their jobs and to disrupt Batu Hijau’s operations.”
With respect to the 7% PTNNT shares that KSB would like to secure, that decision resides, at this point, with the Central Government, not with PTNNT’s foreign shareholders or with PTNNT. By offering the 7% shares for sale, the foreign shareholders of PTNNT have complied with all applicable obligations and requirements as set forth under Contract of Work entered into by and between Government of Indonesia and PTNNT signed in 1986.
PTNNT contributes significantly to the national, regional and local economy through taxes, non-tax fees and royalty payments which amounted to a total of Rp5,76 trillion or US$651 million in 2010 alone. PTNNT also spent US$125.3 million in employee payroll, of which 63% are recruited locally from within the Nusa Tenggara province and the majority of those employees from the West Sumbawa district. In addition, the company spent US$31.8 million in local purchases and contracts, and US$7.5 million in community development projects.***
