West Sumbawa, Tambangnews.com. - Zulkifli Hasan SE, MM.,  RI Minister of Forestry, praised  the reclamation programs carried out by PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara and named PTNNT as one of the best mining companies in Indonesia [for land reclamation program]. He said the above during a visit to PTNNT’s mine reclamation area in West Sumbawa, Thursday (7 / 10).

"Newmont is great. I've visited many mine companies in Indonesia and alhamdulillah Newmont is far from what I thought. Newmont’s forest management is very good. Its tailing management does not harm the environment as the system channels tailings to the deep [Senunu] Canyon so it does not cause pollution. No visible signs of tailings.  Fishermen also catch fish there. I hope that Newmont’s environmental management practices will be adopted by other mine companies and it will serve as a role model. I believe that it is the best , “said Minister of Forestry Zulkifli Hasan, SE, MM.

Zulkifli Hasan further said the environment and trees at the mine area were properly managed  despite [climate] at mine area was much drier. Ex-mine area has been reclaimed accordingly so that the area did not look like an ex-mine area. "Tailings is channeled into the deep sea through pipelines so it does not damage the environment at all. So, Newmont could be a model [for other mine companies], "said Zulkifli Hasan.

Meantime, PTNNT President Director Martiono Hadianto said PTNNT conducted  land reclamation program in accordance with environmental management plan and under the assistance and guidance of the Ministry of Forestry and Forestry Office [of NTB]. "We extend our gratitude to the government for their guidance in the implementation of land reclamation at  Batu Hijau mine," said Martiono Hadianto.

Following the visit, the Minister and PTNNT’s President Director symbolically planted trees at PTNNT area. “We will nurture the tree the minister planted and we take it as a catalyst to continue proper land reclamation in accordance with our value to demonstrate leadership in environmental stewardship,” added Martiono.

By mid 2010, PTNNT has reclaimed an area of 689 hectares. PTNNT carries out land reclamation concurrently with mining operations to minimize land erosion. “Most of the reclaimed areas resemble the condition before the mining activities and wild animals start to grow in number,” he said.

In addition to the reclamation, PTNNT actively carries out tree planting at the state land and community land around mine. “Over 28,000 trees have been planted around the mine area recently. We have also planted hundreds of thousands of teak trees on community sland,” added Martiono.

PTNNT has run copper and gold mine operation at Batu Hijau, West Sumbawa since 2000. The company applies high management and environmental stewardship standards in all aspects of its operations.  

PTNNT recently received ADITAMA Award from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources as the best mining company in environmental management. Its environmental management performance has been recognized with Green PROPER awards by the Ministry of Environment for three periods in a row.***
